Why do you need learning from disasters training?

This program helps mine workers and leaders recognise recurrent patterns of failure, build a safer work culture, and develop strategies to mitigate risks.

The NSW Resources Regulator developed the Learning from Disasters training package to help mine workers learn from historical mining disasters and prevent future incidents. This training incorporates findings from investigations and independent reviews of mining incidents involving fatalities, serious injuries, or significant risks to workers and the wider community.

We are an Approved Training Provider (Approval No. 0004506) and deliver the one-day Learning from Disasters program to holders of practising certificates for any class of mine.

This program satisfies the maintenance of competence requirements and ensures participants gain essential skills and knowledge to improve safety in the mining industry.

What will you learn?

Participants in the Learning from Disasters training will gain practical insights to help reduce risks and promote safety.

During the program, participants will:

Recognise recurring patterns of failure that contribute to workplace disasters.

Understand how managing principal hazards links to reducing risks and improving safety outcomes.

Identify the roles and responsibilities that foster a safe work culture.

Analyse contemporary risk factors and vulnerabilities in safety management systems.

Using these skills and tools, participants will then be able to develop risk control strategies and actionable recommendations to manage work health and safety risks.

The training includes an interactive timeline of NSW mining disasters, offering a unique opportunity to learn from historical incidents while building a foundation for improved safety practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

The program examines a range of significant mining industry disasters, both in Australia and internationally, exploring the systemic failures, human factors, and leadership decisions that contributed to each event. We use these as learning tools rather than post-mortems – the goal is to extract lessons that are directly applicable to your people and your site. The specific cases can be selected based on relevance to your industry sector and the learning outcomes you want to achieve.

With great care and respect. We acknowledge that these events represent real lives lost, and we approach the content with appropriate gravity. Our focus is always on systemic learning, not blame – we examine how organisations, systems, and leadership created conditions where disaster became possible. Participants consistently tell us this approach creates powerful, lasting learning that compliance-based safety training simply cannot achieve.

Yes, though the facilitation approach may vary. For newer employees, the program builds foundational safety awareness and respect for risk from the start of their career. For experienced workers and supervisors, it challenges complacency and deepens their understanding of how major accidents unfold – often gradually, through a series of small decisions and missed signals. Both cohorts leave with a stronger understanding of their role in preventing serious harm.

Yes. We regularly deliver programs directly at mine sites and can work within your operational schedule to minimise disruption. Delivering training on-site adds authenticity and relevance – participants can connect the learning directly to their own environment. We also find that site-based delivery tends to generate more honest and meaningful conversation.
