Non-technical skills (NTS) – sometimes called human factors or crew resource management skills – are the cognitive, social, and personal resource skills that complement technical knowledge. In mining, where the consequences of errors can be catastrophic, non-technical skill failures are a significant contributor to serious incidents. Developing these skills is increasingly recognised as essential for creating genuinely safe and high-performing workplaces.
Standard safety training typically focuses on hazards, procedures, and compliance. NTS training focuses on the human behaviours and cognitive processes that determine whether those procedures are actually followed effectively – particularly under pressure, in dynamic conditions, or when unexpected situations arise. The two are complementary: technical safety knowledge tells people what to do, NTS training develops the skills to do it consistently and well.
