Associated Non-Technical Skills (ANTS) Training

Building essential skills for safe and efficient mining operations

In the mining industry, technical expertise alone isn’t enough to ensure safety and operational success.

Associated Non-Technical Skills (ANTS), addressing leadership, communication, teamwork, decision-making and situational awareness, play a critical role in complementing technical skills and driving effective performance.

With a focus on practical application, this workshop ensures participants leave with actionable tools and strategies for their roles.

What does ANTS training involve?

ANTS training is designed to support work, health and safety (WHS) compliance and competence in the mining sector, as well as the providing skills to effectively lead teams.

A requirement of the NSW Resources Regulator, our ANTS workshop meets the maintenance of competence requirements for practising certificate holders. The program provides 6.5 hours of recognised learning to ensure participants maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills required for their statutory functions.

This training is crucial for professionals in the mining industry seeking to meet competency requirements. It is specifically designed for supervisors, team leaders, open cut examiners, deputies, under managers, superintendents, and managers.

Develop Associated Non-Technical Skills for operational success

Our ANTS training, specifically designed for the mining sector, equips workers, supervisors, and managers with the cognitive, social, and personal resource skills needed to foster safety, efficiency, and collaboration.

During the workshop, participants will engage with and develop skills  through  interactive learning, featuring group scenarios, role plays, and individual activities to ensure practical engagement as we address the ANTS topic of communication: Explore the communication skills required of workplace leaders, including overcoming barriers, improving presentation skills (e.g., toolbox talks), and managing perception and bias.

Situational awareness:
Learn how to perceive and interpret surroundings, anticipate risks, and regain situational awareness when it is lost.
Decision making:
Master high-risk decision-making processes, strategic thinking, and risk assessment with a structured approach.
Leadership:
Understand effective leadership attributes, adapt leadership styles to different situations, and define your unique leadership brand.
Teamwork:
Build team culture, understand DISC behavioural profiles, foster collaboration and improve team performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Non-technical skills (NTS) – sometimes called human factors or crew resource management skills – are the cognitive, social, and personal resource skills that complement technical knowledge. They include situational awareness, communication, decision-making, leadership, and team collaboration. In mining, where the consequences of errors can be catastrophic, non-technical skill failures are a significant contributor to serious incidents. Developing these skills is increasingly recognised as essential for creating genuinely safe and high-performing workplaces.

Standard safety training typically focuses on hazards, procedures, and compliance. NTS training focuses on the human behaviours and cognitive processes that determine whether those procedures are actually followed effectively – particularly under pressure, in dynamic conditions, or when unexpected situations arise. The two are complementary: technical safety knowledge tells people what to do, NTS training develops the skills to do it consistently and well.

Yes. We regularly integrate NTS content into broader safety leadership programs, supervisor development programs, and induction processes. We can also deliver it as a standalone module. We’ll work with you to determine the best way to incorporate this training into your existing capability framework.

Yes. We design this training in alignment with the non-technical skills frameworks used in the mining industry and relevant to Australian WHS legislative requirements. We stay current with industry research and guidance from regulators to ensure the content reflects best practice.
