HIA Negotiation Skills Workshop

Leadership & Performance Partners have been working with the Housing Industry Association (HIA) in the Hunter to develop a Negotiation Skills Workshop.

The first of these was conducted at HIA’s Mayfield West offices on Friday 8th November 2019 with attendees from a number of residential construction businesses including McDonald Jones Homes; Hotondo Homes; Graph; Coastal Edge Projects; Octobrik; LSC Construction; Reynolds Homes; MBC Construction; and Buildsmart Constructions.

The 4 hour Negotiation Skills Workshop covered a number of topics including:

  • Defining negotiation
  • Undertaking a Win-Win negotiation
  • The benefits of effective negotiation
  • The communication skills required of a effective negotiator
  • Understanding personality and behaviours when negotiating using the DISC model
  • The negotiation process and steps
  • Identifying the ZOPA (Zone of Potential Agreement)
  • Identifying your BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement)

The workshop was interactive, with participants completing two negotiation role plays during the session based on examples from the residential construction industry.  Those in attendance contributed positively to the day, being prepared to share their own negotiation examples; ask questions; and provide their own opinions and ideas.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants received a Certificate of Attendance from HIA and 4 CPD points.

Thanks to Craig Jennion and Joanne Greig from HIA Hunter for their support in developing the workshop.  It would not have been possible without their commitment and vision.
