With a range of changes occurring throughout the business, Delta Electricity realised that at an operational level they were experiencing a lack of performance management procedures and at a team level there was resistance to change among staff. After recognising the need for a solution, they partnered with our facilitators to deliver six targeted Change Management workshops to their team.
THE CLIENT:
Delta Electricity is a privately owned company that operates Vales Point Power Station, located in Lake Macquarie. The company employs over 300 staff who work primarily at the Power Station site, accompanied by a small Marketing and Finance team based at their Sydney Office.
A large majority of the workforce have been with the business since leaving school and university.
THE CHALLENGE:
Delta Electricity wanted to ensure their workforce of long-standing employees were being adequately supported and empowered by management to perform at their best, rather than simply following the status quo.
Some of their challenges included:
- staff resistance to change
- people being promoted to leadership roles with high technical skills but lack of people and leadership skills
- poor performance not being addressed
- poor collaboration between different sections and functional teams
- inconsistent Leadership approaches
- poor Change Management and Project Execution skills
THE PREPARATION:
Our team was onboarded by Delta Electricity to design, develop and implement multiple tailored staff development workshops. This process involved working closely with several key internal stakeholders including:
- Executive Team
- Senior Management
- HR Team
- Supervisor and Team Leaders
Upon engaging and gathering feedback from these stakeholders, we were able to identify aspects of the business to be incorporated into our delivery.
This included the unique organisational challenges and the leaders operating in that context and the Senior Leadership Team’s role in the development and delivery of the program.
Additionally, we assessed the business as our target audience and any realistic and relevant case studies we could apply.
INTERVENTION:
Following our initial engagements with Delta Electricity’s stakeholders, our team was able to execute an ongoing program specific to the needs of their team.
We collaborated with the HR staff on the use of self-development tools such as LSI 1 & 2, and DISC Leadership Assessment. These were particularly helpful in providing a platform for self-awareness and improved emotional intelligence.
A total of six workshops were delivered monthly over a six-month period, covering the following topic areas:
- Emotional Intelligence for Leaders
- Leadership Skills
- Managing Performance
- Developing High Performance Teams
- Change Management and Negotiation Skills
- Presentation of Individual Business Improvement Projects
Between the sessions, participants were also provided additional one on one coaching sessions and “Manager Check-ins,” to address their individual development and growth opportunities.
These extra sessions provided staff with further reinforcement of the learning outcomes addressed in the workshops, and the opportunity to develop a Professional Development Plan for the future.
OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of the workshops, the management team at Delta Electricity noticed positive changes in the morale and leadership capabilities of their staff. Delta Electricity Maintenance Manager, Chris Rogers said the change he’s seen in their teams is evident.
“The participant feedback for this program was excellent and the skills developed have provided good value to the business,” Chris said. “Leadership & Performance Partners have also provided ad-hoc support to our teams to assist the business in dealing with specific issues.”
HR Manager, Clair Osbourne also added that the reaction from the teams has been encouraging.
“The feedback from both the participants and their Managers, has been overwhelmingly positive and most importantly we have seen a measurable shift in leadership capability in these employees, many of whom have gone on to senior leadership roles in our business.”
Other outcomes of the program included:
- Implementation of Business Improvement Projects
- Promotion of Participants to leadership roles within the business
- Reduction of a “Silo Mentality” within the business
- Improved Performance Management of staff
- Improved Self Awareness and Emotional Intelligence of participants
