In early 2022, The Marketing GP approached our team to assist in developing and refining their management team’s individual leadership styles.
The team wanted to better understand the way they manage and to gain useful tools and insight to help support team growth. We created a unique training program for the team based around self-discovery, collaboration, performance management and leadership styles and techniques.
Read on to see how we prepared and worked with their team to develop their Leadership Workshop.
THE CLIENT:
The Marketing GP is a strategic marketing agency based in Newcastle and delivers solutions-driven results to their wide range of clients.
The leadership team at The Marketing GP currently comprises of four members who have a strong focus on mentoring and maintaining the strong team culture within the business.
The Marketing GP is committed to implementing processes to ensure their team gets the best support in their career and day-to-day jobs.
The team recognised the need to constantly upskill in their management approach and leadership style to support the team, particularly as they have gone through a rapid growth phase as a business. It was also an opportunity to increase confidence in each leader’s ability to mentor and grow their team members.
THE CHALLENGE:
In line with The Marketing GP’s growth trajectory, the leadership team were required to take on additional roles and responsibilities that were more defined to ensure the needs of staff members, clients and the business continued to be met.
As the leadership team took on a more significant role in the management of team members, they saw a need to upskill and broaden their leadership toolkit. Giving knowledge to the team was vital to ensure confidence and structure to the way the leadership team led employees and create consistency amongst all involved.
The Marketing GP also recognised that each leader within the team had a vastly different leadership profile and thus wanted to bridge approaches and ensure the business made the most of each individual’s strengths and acknowledge their weaknesses.
DELIVERING A PROGRAM TO BENEFIT THEIR LEADERSHIP TEAM:
We put together a comprehensive program for the session, with a personalised training booklet that provided more detail on the areas covered and relayed our advice.
The half day training session for The Marketing GP provided the opportunity for each attendee to take time to understand their own leadership goals, weaknesses, and strengths. Identifying these aspects was a vital step in understanding the potential of the leaders in the business and harnessing their individual profiles in a collaborative way.
Our booklet provided context for discussion and included content around the Eisenhower Matrix, the difference between coaching and mentoring, positive and constructive feedback, and the 70/20/10 model. We also took the team through the activity of building a tent blindfolded to help drive home the importance of leadership, clear communication and working collaboratively to produce positive outcomes.
The core areas the leadership team wanted to cover were finding ways to get the most of their team members, motivating and supporting them in their goals, providing feedback and identifying and creating avenues for growth.
We also structured the day around understanding the business’ values and how they are ingrained into the team’s day-to-day work, as well as best practice when it comes to challenging conversations with employees.
OUTCOMES:
The feedback from the leadership team was extremely positive, particularly regarding the hands-on nature of the program.
The participants were able to appreciate each other’s individual leadership styles and use these to the advantage of the business.
Managing Director, Holly Martin said it was essential to take time out of the day-to-day activities of the business and focus on personal growth.
“My key feedback for the training was that we needed more time! We take emotional intelligence and upskilling in our leadership style very seriously and will be attending additional sessions in the future to continue our personal and professional growth.
“As leaders, we believe that upskilling in what we do is essential to better support our team members. And we have walked away with numerous, beneficial strategies to better manage our people thanks to the Leadership and Performance Partners team.
“The Leadership and Performance Partners team were knowledgeable and flexible in their approach to our training, and it meant we got more out of the session than we could have imagined. Thank you!”
