Associated non-technical skills (ANTS) are the cognitive, social and personal resource skills that complement technical skills and contribute to safe and efficient task performance in the mining industry.

Competence in ANTS enables all who work in the mining industry to interact effectively. Research relating to incidents in high risk industry sectors such as aviation, medicine, oil and gas, and mining indicates that the failure of work systems to produce the WHS outcomes often result from inadequacy of ANTS. The ANTS workshop provides 6 ½ hours of recognised learning required for the maintenance of competence scheme, a requirement to keep the knowledge and skills up-to-date of individuals who hold a practising certificate to exercise specific statutory functions in the mining industry.

The ANTS Workshop covers 5 key development areas identified by the NSW Resources Regulator.


The communications skills required of a workplace leader; barriers to effective communication; presentations skills (Toolbox Talks); perception and bias effect; the impact of words

Situational Awareness

Perception and using your senses; understanding and creating a mental picture; thinking ahead – projection; identifying when there is a lack of situational awareness; regaining situational awareness

Decision making

Applying decision making process; consideration of risk when considering options; the 6 Step Approach to High Risk Decision Making; team engagement when making decisions; strategic thinking


The attributes of effective leaders; leadership role models; leadership styles and the need for situational leadership; your ‘leadership brand’


The 4 Stages of Team Performance; providing feedback; above and below the line behaviours; DISC behavioural profiles; team culture

All participants receive a manual with workshop information; key learnings and templates for use back in the workplace.

Our workshops are highly interactive requiring participants to complete individual activities; group scenarios and role plays. Therefore, group sizes are capped at 12 people.


Beyond the many learnings you will take away from the workshop, you will receive a Participant Guide that provides relevant information in relation to the ANTS content and to use as back in the workplace.
